Paper Basis Weight

Basis weight is the weight of a ream, commonly 500 sheets, cut to the standard basis size for that paper grade. The basis size changes between paper categories, so two papers marked with the same pound value may have different thickness and feel.

A quote that lists only pounds leaves an international buyer without a clean comparison. Ask for the paper grade, basis weight, GSM, and a physical sheet or bag sample.

Matte Surfaces

Embossing and Debossing

Embossing raises a shape from the paper. Debossing presses it inward.

The relief needs enough area and paper support to stay visible after conversion and packing. Check the back of the panel, the fold distance, the printed registration, and whether the bag will rub against other bags in the carton.

Spot UV and Other Printed Effects

Spot UV places a glossy cured coating on selected areas. It can create a quiet contrast on a matte printed field, but the register must hold between the print and the spot layer.

Metallic ink, pearlescent ink, and opaque white have different limits. Ask for a method-specific proof instead of approving an on-screen simulation.

Fold, Rub, and Scuff Risks

Dense dark print can whiten or crack along a fold if the paper, ink film, score, and grain direction do not work together. Matte and soft-touch surfaces may also show rub marks where flat bags slide inside a carton.

Fold the printed sample, stack it, handle it, and carry it. Record where damage appears. A flat press sheet cannot answer those questions.
